Government Investigation of British American Tobacco in Romania
In their mission to maximize profits from the sale of deadly and addictive products, tobacco companies have been investigated by governments across the world for activity including bribery, corruption, and avoiding paying corporate taxes. Tobacco companies use their relationships with government officials, politicians, media, and businesses to block tobacco control policies. Tobacco companies can be weakened when their misconduct is publicly exposed and those relationships are strained and severed.
Inspectors of the Government’s Control Corps are looking into a case of possible conflict of interest. Members of the Inter-ministerial Committee for Tobacco Control may have been influenced by the tobacco industry to block the promulgation of the law containing the amendment of the Law no. 349/2002 on the prevention and control of the consumption of tobacco products. The law is necessary to implement the 2014/40 / EU Directive in Romania.
