Government Investigations of Big Tobacco
In their mission to maximize profits from the sale of deadly and addictive products, tobacco companies have been investigated by governments across the world for activity including bribery, corruption, and avoiding paying corporate taxes. Tobacco companies like British American Tobacco use their relationships with government officials, politicians, media, and businesses to block tobacco control policies. Tobacco companies can be weakened when their misconduct is publicly exposed and those relationships are strained and severed.
The Dutch tax authority investigated British American Tobacco for tax avoidance and has issued assessments for the years 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012 in the sum of €202 million (£172 million) to cover tax, interest and penalties.
