Tobacco Companies are Avoiding Taxes and Bribing Governments

Support government investigations into British American Tobacco for tax avoidance, bribery, and corruption.

Tobacco companies worldwide exploit loopholes to avoid paying their fair share of taxes. Governments must take action immediately to stem the flow of much-needed funds from their countries by an industry already exacting a heavy toll in terms of lives lost to tobacco use. Make sure everyone you know is aware that British American Tobacco is being accused of tax avoidance in Bangladesh by sharing this now!

How British American Tobacco Avoids Taxes

In their mission to maximize profits from the sale of deadly and addictive products, tobacco companies have been accused of activity including bribery, corruption, and avoiding paying corporate taxes. Tobacco companies can be weakened when their misconduct is publicly exposed and those relationships are strained and severed.

Multinational tobacco companies are very profitable, however the scale of the profits and their corporate income tax paid is relatively small compared to the scale of the economic damage caused by smoking. A Tax Justice Network Report examined British American Tobacco (BAT) in Bangladesh, Indonesia, Brazil, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Kenya, Uganda and Zambia, revealing the efforts that BAT goes to, to minimise the amount of profit left behind in those countries. Tax Justice Network found tax avoidance strategies by BAT will cost these eight countries US$718 million between 2018 and 2030.

According to Tax Justice Network, Bangladesh will lose out on an estimated US$7.4 million per year in taxes avoided by BAT. Approximately $88.8 million between the years 2018 and 2030.
