Philip Morris International – the giant tobacco company – announced in September 2017 that it had established the Foundation for a Smoke-Free World, with funding of $80 million per year over the next 12 years. This foundation is part of Philip Morris’s campaign to portray itself as part of the solution to the global tobacco epidemic, which kills more than 7 million people worldwide each year.
Tobacco companies cannot stay in business unless kids get hooked on tobacco. Referring to youth as “replacement smokers,” the world’s largest tobacco companies are targeting kids with special advertising and promotions, tobacco products designed to appeal to youth, and product placement near primary and secondary schools across the globe.
